Photosynthesis
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008930
A metabolic process used by plants, algae, and certain bacteria to convert light energy into chemical energy, stored in the bonds of carbohydrate molecules. In this process, light energy drives a reaction where carbon dioxide and water are converted into glucose (a sugar) and oxygen as a byproduct. The overall balanced chemical equation for the most common form of photosynthesis is 6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂.
