Phytoplankton
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008959
Microscopic, photosynthetic organisms that inhabit the upper, sunlit layers of almost all oceans and bodies of fresh water. These organisms, including certain bacteria (cyanobacteria) and protists (like diatoms and dinoflagellates), form the base of the aquatic food web. As primary producers, they are responsible for a large proportion of the Earth's oxygen production through photosynthesis.
