Zooplankton

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012818

Heterotrophic planktonic organisms that drift in oceans, seas, and freshwater bodies, consuming phytoplankton or other zooplankton. These microscopic animals form a vital link in aquatic food webs, transferring energy from primary producers to higher trophic levels, including fish and marine mammals. Their populations are sensitive indicators of environmental changes, such as ocean acidification and temperature fluctuations.
