Plankton

Small, often microscopic, organisms that drift in bodies of water, unable to swim against currents. They form the base of many aquatic food webs and are categorized into phytoplankton (photosynthetic) and zooplankton (heterotrophic). Their abundance and composition are indicators of water quality and ecosystem health.
