Nekton

The group of aquatic organisms that can actively swim and move independently of water currents, as opposed to passively drifting. This category includes a wide variety of animals, from small crustaceans and cephalopods to large vertebrates like fish and marine mammals. Nektonic species are distinguished from plankton, which drift with currents, and benthos, which live on the seafloor.
