Describing the open water column of a sea, lake, or ocean, distinct from the bottom (benthic) or coastal (littoral) zones. Organisms living in this zone are referred to as pelagic organisms, including plankton, nekton, and some marine birds. This environment is characterized by its depth, light penetration, and nutrient distribution.
