Estuary
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013079
A partially enclosed coastal body of water where freshwater from rivers and streams mixes with saltwater from the ocean. This mixing creates a unique environment with gradients in salinity, temperature, and nutrient levels that support specific ecosystems. From an ecotoxicology perspective, estuaries are often sinks for pollutants from both terrestrial and marine sources, leading to the bioaccumulation of contaminants in resident organisms.
