Bioaccumulation

The net uptake and retention of a substance by an organism from all environmental sources, including food, water, and air. This process results in a higher concentration of the substance in the organism than in the surrounding environment. Bioaccumulation is a key concern for persistent organic pollutants and heavy metals in ecosystems.
