Pinnipeds
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008976
A clade of carnivorous, fin-footed, semiaquatic marine mammals. This group includes seals, sea lions, and the walrus. As apex or high-level predators in many marine ecosystems, pinnipeds are studied in ecotoxicology for their potential to bioaccumulate persistent organic pollutants and heavy metals from their diet, making them key indicator species for environmental contamination.
