Microphyte

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007347

A microscopic plant, a term that broadly includes photosynthetic microorganisms such as microalgae and cyanobacteria. These organisms are primary producers in aquatic ecosystems, forming the base of the food web. In ecotoxicology, microphytes are frequently used as indicator species in bioassays to assess the toxicity of chemicals in water bodies, as their growth rates are sensitive to pollutants.
