Periphyton
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008654
A complex community of microorganisms, including algae, cyanobacteria, heterotrophic microbes, and detritus, that are attached to submerged surfaces in aquatic environments. This biofilm forms on rocks, plants, and other substrates in both freshwater and marine ecosystems. It serves as a primary food source for many aquatic invertebrates and fish.
