Alga
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000380
Any of a large and heterogeneous group of simple, aquatic, photosynthetic organisms, ranging from single-celled phytoplankton to large multicellular seaweeds. They lack the complex structures like true roots, stems, or leaves found in higher plants and are primary producers in many aquatic ecosystems. Their classification is based on pigmentation, cell wall composition, and storage products, with major groups including green algae (Chlorophyta), red algae (Rhodophyta), and brown algae (Phaeophyceae).
