Autotroph
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001010
An organism that produces its own food from simple inorganic substances, using light or chemical energy. These organisms form the base of most food webs, converting inorganic carbon into organic compounds. Photosynthetic autotrophs, such as plants and algae, use sunlight, while chemosynthetic autotrophs derive energy from chemical reactions.
