Heterotrophic
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005273
Describing an organism that obtains its carbon and energy by consuming organic compounds produced by other organisms. These organisms cannot synthesize their own food from inorganic sources. Most bacteria, fungi, and animals are heterotrophic, relying on the breakdown of complex organic molecules for survival and growth.
