Essential nutrient

A chemical substance that an organism requires for normal physiological function but cannot synthesize on its own, or cannot synthesize in sufficient quantities. These substances must be obtained from external sources, such as diet. Examples for humans include certain amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids.
