Auxotrophy
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001017
A nutritional requirement in an organism for a specific organic compound that it cannot synthesize on its own. This genetic inability to produce a necessary metabolite means the organism must obtain the compound from its environment for growth and survival. For example, some bacteria are auxotrophic for certain amino acids.
