Primary producer

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009442

An organism that creates its own food from inorganic sources of energy and nutrients. These autotrophs form the base of most food webs by converting light energy through photosynthesis or chemical energy through chemosynthesis into organic compounds. In ecotoxicology, the accumulation of contaminants in primary producers like algae and plants is the first step in biomagnification through the food chain.
