Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009000

Describing an aquatic organism that feeds on plankton, which are the small, often microscopic, organisms drifting in the water column. This feeding strategy is common in both invertebrates, such as corals and krill, and vertebrates, including many species of fish and baleen whales. Planktivores are a primary link in aquatic food webs, transferring energy from primary producers (phytoplankton) and primary consumers (zooplankton) to higher trophic levels.
