Trophic level

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012316

A position an organism occupies in a food chain, indicating its primary source of energy. Producers form the base, followed by primary consumers (herbivores), secondary consumers (carnivores that eat herbivores), and tertiary consumers (carnivores that eat other carnivores). Each level represents a step in the transfer of energy through an ecosystem.
