Relating to nutrition, in ecology especially to the way organisms obtain food and pass energy along a food chain. Producers make their own food from light or chemical energy, primary consumers eat producers, secondary consumers eat primary consumers, and decomposers feed on dead material from every level. Each step up to a higher trophic level typically passes on only about 10 percent of the energy of the level below.
