Diatom
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003142
A single-celled alga characterized by a cell wall composed of hydrated amorphous silica, forming intricate and often ornate patterns. These microscopic organisms are abundant in aquatic environments, both fresh and marine, and are a primary component of phytoplankton. Diatoms contribute substantially to global oxygen production.
