Diazenyl radicals

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003143

Radicals of the structure RN=N•, formally derived by removing a hydrogen atom from a diazene, RN=NH, with the unpaired electron on the terminal nitrogen atom. They readily lose dinitrogen to give R•, which is why aryldiazenyl radicals appear as intermediates in radical arylations that start from arenediazonium salts. Arylazo radicals, ArN=N•, are the subclass in which R is an aryl group.
