Diazo compounds
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003144
Organic compounds in which a carbon atom is doubly bonded to the first nitrogen of the diazo group, written R2C=N+=N-, with diazomethane, CH2N2, as the simplest member. The terminal nitrogen carries the negative charge, so the group is a 1,3-dipole. On heating, photolysis, or metal catalysis they lose dinitrogen to give carbenes or metal carbenoids, which is why they serve as carbene precursors.
