Α-oxo carbenes

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000725

Highly reactive intermediates that possess a divalent carbon atom (carbene) directly adjacent to a carbonyl group. These species are characterized by the general formula R-C(=O)-C:, where the carbene carbon is bonded to the carbonyl carbon. α-Oxo carbenes are often generated photochemically or thermally from diazo ketones and readily undergo rearrangements, such as the Wolff rearrangement, to form ketenes.
