Acyl carbenes

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000214

A class of carbenes in which the divalent carbon atom is directly attached to the carbonyl carbon of an acyl group. These reactive intermediates exhibit unique reactivity due to the interaction between the electron-deficient carbene center and the adjacent pi system of the carbonyl group. A characteristic reaction of acyl carbenes is the Wolff rearrangement to form a ketene.
