Carbenes

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001622

Neutral compounds containing a divalent carbon atom that has six valence electrons, two of which are non-bonding. These highly reactive species act as intermediates in chemical reactions, including insertions into C-H bonds and additions to double bonds to form cyclopropanes. The simplest carbene is methylene (:CH2), which exists in either a singlet or a triplet electronic state with different geometries and reactivities.
