Alkylidenes
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000408
Carbenes of the form R2C: formed by replacing one or both hydrogens of methylene with alkyl groups, such as propylidene, CH3CH2CH:. The carbon is divalent with only six valence electrons, so these are short-lived reactive intermediates. They differ from alkylidene groups, the divalent substituents written =CR2, which attach to another atom through a double bond.
