Vinylidenes

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012582

A class of carbenes having the structure R₂C=C:, where a divalent carbon atom is double bonded to another carbon atom. They are also known as alkylidenecarbenes and are isomers of alkynes. Vinylidenes are highly reactive intermediates that can be generated photochemically or thermally and rapidly rearrange to the more stable alkyne isomer unless trapped or stabilized in a metal complex.
