Viologens

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012583

Derivatives of 4,4'-bipyridine, specifically the diquaternary salts formed from the N,N'-dialkylation of the parent heterocycle. They are characterized by their ability to undergo reversible one-electron reduction to form stable, intensely colored radical cations. This electrochromic behavior is responsible for their use as redox indicators and in smart windows; the parent compound, methyl viologen, is also known as the herbicide paraquat.
