Parent hydride

A fundamental acyclic or cyclic hydride from which the names of many organic compounds are systematically derived by replacing hydrogen atoms with other atoms or groups. It serves as the basis for IUPAC nomenclature. For example, methane (CH4) is the parent hydride for methyl alcohol (CH3OH).
