Nitrenes

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007950

Highly reactive intermediates containing a neutral, monovalent nitrogen atom that possesses a total of six valence electrons. These uncharged species are the nitrogen analogues of carbenes and are typically generated as transient intermediates in chemical reactions. Like carbenes, they can exist in either a singlet state with paired non-bonding electrons or a triplet state with two unpaired electrons, with the triplet being the ground state for most simple nitrenes.
