Germylidenes

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004865

A class of reactive intermediates containing a divalent germanium atom covalently bonded to two other groups, with the general formula R₂Ge. They are the germanium analogues of carbenes and possess two non-bonding electrons on the germanium atom, which exist in either a singlet or triplet state. Due to their electron-deficient nature, germylidenes are highly reactive and typically observed only under special conditions, such as in low-temperature matrices.
