Nitrenium ions

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007951

Cations of the form R2N+, in which a divalent nitrogen carries a positive charge, one lone pair and only six electrons in its valence shell, making it strongly electrophilic. They are the nitrogen analogues of carbenium ions. Nitrenium ions formed from arylamines and arylamides bind to DNA, which is how those compounds are activated to carcinogens.
