Carbenium centre
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001623
A trivalent carbon atom bearing a formal positive charge, typically sp2 hybridized, with an empty p-orbital. This electron-deficient carbon acts as an electrophile in chemical reactions, seeking electron density to complete its octet. The stability of a carbenium center is influenced by hyperconjugation and inductive effects from adjacent alkyl groups, with tertiary centers being more stable than primary ones.
