Carbenoids

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001625

Reagents that exhibit reactivity characteristic of a carbene without being a free carbene species. They are organometallic complexes that transfer a carbene-like fragment to a substrate, often with greater selectivity and stability than the corresponding free carbene. The Simmons-Smith reagent, an organozinc compound, is a well-known carbenoid used for the cyclopropanation of alkenes.
