Α-addition
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000028
An addition reaction in which two new bonds form to the same atom of one of the reacting species, giving a single product from two or three reactants. A carbene adding to an alkene to give a cyclopropane is an example, since the carbene carbon forms both new bonds. In inorganic chemistry, the same pattern at a metal centre is called oxidative addition, and its reverse is alpha-elimination.
