Α-adrenergic receptor

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000029

A type of G protein-coupled receptor that binds to the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and epinephrine, mediating their effects in the sympathetic nervous system. These receptors are subdivided into α1 and α2 subtypes, which are found in different tissues and elicit distinct physiological responses, such as vasoconstriction, smooth muscle contraction, and inhibition of neurotransmitter release. Agonists and antagonists of these receptors are used in pharmacology to treat conditions like hypertension and glaucoma.
