Spare receptor

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011075

Receptors that exist in excess of the number required to elicit a maximal biological response when activated by an agonist. This phenomenon allows for a maximal effect even when only a fraction of the total receptors are occupied. The presence of spare receptors increases the sensitivity of a cell or tissue to an agonist.
