Spark ionization

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011076

An ionization technique used in mass spectrometry where a high-voltage spark is discharged between two electrodes, one of which contains the sample. The intense energy from the spark vaporizes and ionizes a small portion of the sample, producing a plasma of ions. These ions are then extracted and analyzed by a mass spectrometer, typically for elemental analysis of solid materials.
