Thermal ionization
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011946
The formation of ions from a solid sample by heating it to a high temperature on a metal surface. The sample is vaporized and ionized through contact with the hot filament, which has a high work function. This technique is frequently used as an ion source in mass spectrometry, particularly for isotopic analysis of elements that form positive ions at high temperatures.
