Saha’s ionization equation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010481

A mathematical formula that describes the degree of ionization of a gas in thermal equilibrium as a function of temperature, pressure, and the ionization energy of the atoms. It relates the ratio of the number density of ionized atoms to neutral atoms to the thermal energy of the system. The equation is applied in astrophysics to model stellar atmospheres and in analytical chemistry to describe ionization processes within plasma sources, such as those used in inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy.
