Saint Anthony fire
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010482
A historical name for the disease ergotism, caused by ingesting alkaloids produced by the fungus Claviceps purpurea, which infects rye and other cereal grains. The condition manifests in two primary forms: gangrenous, causing severe vasoconstriction that leads to tissue death in the extremities, and convulsive, characterized by painful seizures, muscle spasms, and hallucinations. The name derives from the intense burning sensation experienced in the limbs.
