Ergotism

A toxic condition caused by the ingestion of ergot alkaloids, which are produced by fungi of the genus Claviceps, particularly Claviceps purpurea, that infect rye and other cereals. Symptoms can include painful spasms, gangrene, convulsions, and hallucinations. Historically, it was known as Saint Anthony's Fire.
