Tetany
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011900
A medical sign characterized by the involuntary contraction of muscles, which can manifest as cramps, spasms, or convulsions. It results from increased neuronal excitability, often caused by disturbances in extracellular mineral concentrations, particularly low calcium levels (hypocalcemia) or low magnesium levels. Other causes include alkalosis, which decreases the ionized fraction of plasma calcium without changing the total calcium level.
