Hypomagnesemia

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013177

An electrolyte disturbance characterized by an abnormally low level of magnesium in the blood. This condition results from decreased dietary intake, reduced gastrointestinal absorption, or increased renal excretion of magnesium. A serum magnesium concentration below 1.8 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) is the standard diagnostic threshold for hypomagnesemia.
