Hypernatremia

An electrolyte disturbance characterized by an elevated sodium concentration in the blood plasma, exceeding the normal physiological range. This condition arises from an imbalance between water intake and water loss, leading to dehydration or excessive sodium retention. A plasma sodium level above 145 mmol/L indicates hypernatremia.
