Builder
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012935
A substance added to a detergent formulation to increase its cleaning efficiency by sequestering or precipitating mineral ions present in hard water. By binding with calcium and magnesium ions, builders prevent these minerals from interfering with the action of the surfactant. Common examples of builders include phosphates, such as sodium tripolyphosphate, zeolites, and citrates.
