Self-cleaning of water
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010706
The natural process by which bodies of water, such as rivers and lakes, remove pollutants and restore their quality through physical, chemical, and biological mechanisms. These mechanisms include dilution, sedimentation, oxidation, biodegradation by microorganisms, and uptake by aquatic plants. The efficiency of self-cleaning depends on factors like water flow, temperature, and the type and concentration of pollutants.
