Tetracyclines
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011901
A class of polyketide antibiotics characterized by a linear, tetracyclic naphthacene carboxamide core structure. They are produced by several species of Streptomyces bacteria and exhibit broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity by inhibiting protein synthesis in bacteria. The parent compound of the series is tetracycline, which has the chemical formula C₂₂H₂₄N₂O₈.
