Polyketides
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009154
A class of natural products derived from the repeated condensation of acetyl coenzyme A and malonyl coenzyme A units. Their biosynthesis involves a pathway similar to fatty acid synthesis, resulting in a long carbon chain with alternating carbonyl and methylene groups, which is then modified. Many antibiotics, such as erythromycin and tetracycline, are members of the polyketide family.
